Phoenix Life · QROPS Transfer for NRIs
Phoenix Group, the parent company of Phoenix Life, specialises in managing closed and legacy UK pension and life assurance books — it's also now the owner of Standard Life's back book. That means many Phoenix Life policyholders hold older, sometimes complex legacy policies. If you have a Phoenix Life pension from your UK working years and have now settled, or are settling, in India, we handle the entire move into an HMRC-recognised QROPS — compliant, tax-aware, and settled directly between providers.

Your Phoenix Life Pension
Phoenix Group built its business model around acquiring and running down closed pension books from other insurers, so a Phoenix Life policy often has more history behind it than most.
Many NRIs holding a Phoenix Life policy actually took it out under a different insurer's name years or decades ago, before that book was acquired and consolidated into Phoenix. This means you may hold an older with-profits pension, which carries bonus structures and sometimes a market value reduction if cashed in at the wrong time, or a policy with a guaranteed annuity rate (GAR) that can be extremely valuable and, in some cases, worth more than the pension pot itself if kept rather than transferred.
Because of this legacy complexity, a Phoenix Life pension needs careful review before any transfer decision. We check for with-profits terms, GAR entitlements and any exit penalties as a first step, so you understand exactly what you'd be giving up, if anything, before moving forward.
Transfer Considerations
The rules that govern this transfer come from HMRC, not Phoenix Life — but legacy policy features make careful review especially important here.
With-profits terms and guaranteed annuity rates can be genuinely valuable — we check for these before recommending any transfer, not after.
As with any provider, we confirm your receiving scheme is on HMRC's recognised list before any funds move, avoiding the unauthorised payment charge of up to 55%.
Discharge forms, ID verification and provider declarations are all prepared to be accepted by Phoenix Life the first time.
